C1845, when he was 16 George Burgess travelled to America with his brother-in-law George Sperring (1839-1855) to finish their apprenticeship in stone cutting; he returned to Bristol, England for the third and last time in 1857. 

While in America George Burgess learnt the skills of Phrenology, a Victorian pseudo-science (reading bumps on people’s heads), and after his return to Bristol, England, for 40 years from 1861 until his retirement in 1901 George Burgess made it his profession in the shopping Arcades in Bristol.
