THE WORLD CONTAINS WARM HEARTS AND TRUE.

Oh, ye who have trusted in friendship, and found
That friendship, like love, can grow cold and decay,
Who gaze with distrust on the smiles beaming round,
And from proffer’d hands turn so sadly away,
List to the maxim I’ve written for you,
And believe it – the world contains warm hearts and true.

If some have deceived you, be sure ‘tis design’d
For a purpose that wisely and justly will end;
It will teach you to prize the true hearts you may find,
And bear with the fault while you cling to the friend;
We all have our failings – God knows they’re not few;
But you’ll find that the world contains warm hearts and true.

Have confidence; oh! how I scorn that man’s mind,
Who fancies deceit lurks within every breast,
Who having met falsehood, will doubt all mankind,
And go down to his grave by friendship unblest;
If you have faith in others they’ll have faith in you;
For you’ll find that the world contains warm hearts and true.
